About This Work

I attended a talk hosted by my local Women's Institute (I LOVE my Wells Angel Grrl Gang and I'm a proud member). The talk was delivered by a representative for an charitable organisation called Girl Rising. As I sat and listened, learning more about the amazing work they do to get the 6 million (at that time) girls denied access to education into schools across the globe I just became so inspired. We watched a chapter from the film they produced that shares real girls stories in such a heart twanging way and I was so overcome with emotion.

I am mother to two daughters so seeing other girls struggle to obtain something that we in this country take for granted had a real effect on me!

I came home and went straight out to my studio to begin this, I didn't know how it would turn out but I love it very much.

It is merely a dot on the landscape of amazing women who deserve to be celebrated. These women were in my sketch book under the list 'Women I'd Like To Eat Brunch With' (Yes it's catchy huh? I will be working on a series of that title soon just you wait and see and I'm very excited by it)

EXTRA: This print will come with a paper print out detailing the amazing women featured in this print with some very basic sources to allow you to learn their stories. I will be adding more sources/research as I delve deeper while making more work about some of these and many more inspiring women.

This work serves as a mere introduction and brief of some incredible women. The included A5 further reading booklet is a very brief overview of cut and pasted information and sources, yes there are most likely typos in it but I really wanted to share a leap off point for anyone else who might like to join me in celebrating some awesome women. I know how much I enjoy further reading links so I couldn't bear to not offer any.

If you don't already then sign up below to my studio newsletter & Social Media to be kept up to date with my Women's History series amongst other things.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT THIS WORK

"What is Girl Rising?

Girl Rising is a global campaign for girls’ education and empowerment.

We use the power of storytelling to share the simple truth that educating girls can transform societies. Our mission is to change the way the world values the girl and ensure that girls’ education is part of the mainstream conversation.

Together with partners, we launch high profile campaigns to bring visibility to the issues girls face and inspire people to dismantle the barriers that hold them back.

We raise awareness about the issue, inspire action and make change happen through film and other tools, such as educational and advocacy videos, screening guides and a free school curriculum.

We also focus on getting girls in school through ENGAGE - a dynamic public-private partnership in India, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Nigeria - and seek opportunities to expand our efforts to other places where our message is especially timely."
